John McCnnell born in Hatley 20 May 1799. HIs early traini
ng had been limited to the very defective schools of the se
ttlement, but possessing of a clear and discrimiating mind
, he acquired a good amount of knowledge and was well acqua
inted with jurisprudence and the politics of our country. I
n 1844 e was elected to represent Stanstead county in the P
rovincial Parliament and in 1847 was returned by acclamatio
n. His political career was a propsperous one. He has sust
ained the office of magistrate for many years, has filled s
uccessively the office of sergeant, ensign, lieutenant, cap
tain, major, and lieut colonel, in the militia and has bee
n active in the unicipal and educational interestof of th
e township and county. At the age of 21 he married Alice, d
aughter of Jesse Wadleigh.
